Use SwitchBot where a small add-on solves the problem neatly
SwitchBot shines after renovation, in rented homes and anywhere a working switch or curtain would be costly or awkward to replace. Curtain robots, button pushers, relays and Bluetooth sensors add control without opening up walls.
The trade-off is a bit more upkeep: calibration, batteries and radio coverage. If you’re renovating and a purpose-built track, relay or wired control can go in cleanly, compare that permanent option before reaching for an add-on.
Start with a direct Bluetooth connection
The official SwitchBot Bluetooth integration controls supported devices locally, with no SwitchBot hub needed. Home Assistant just needs suitable Bluetooth hardware within range. Names from the SwitchBot app don’t carry over, so we name each room and device clearly during setup.
Some encrypted devices need a key. Home Assistant can fetch it from a standard SwitchBot account, or you can enter it by hand. Accounts that use single sign-on can’t use this import.
Test Bluetooth coverage where the device will actually sit
Walls, cabinets and metal curtain tracks all eat into Bluetooth range, so test from the device’s final position. A Bluetooth proxy (a small helper placed nearer the far rooms) extends local coverage while the main server stays wired in a sensible spot.
A SwitchBot hub still makes sense if you want app-only features or Matter bridging. Matter is the cross-brand smart-home standard, but a Matter bridge only shares certain device types and settings, so check the function you need is included rather than assuming your whole SwitchBot account will appear.
Plan for battery changes, recalibration and manual use
A retrofit device can be perfectly reliable and still need more looking after than a wired one. We note each device’s battery type, likely upkeep, how to recalibrate it and how to work it by hand.
For locks, curtains and anything attached to an important appliance, make sure everyone at home knows how to operate or release it by hand if the smart side stops responding.

Do I need a SwitchBot Hub for Home Assistant?+
Often not. Many supported devices work directly over local Bluetooth. Add a hub only when you actually need its extra coverage, app features or Matter bridge.
Can a Bluetooth proxy control SwitchBot devices?+
Yes. Home Assistant supports remote Bluetooth adapters, including ESPHome proxies that hold active connections. Check the proxy can do this and that the signal is good where it’s installed.
Is SwitchBot good for permanent curtain installation?+
It’s great for retrofits and anything you may want to undo. For new or heavy curtains, it’s worth also looking at a properly sized purpose-built motor and track.
Does the Matter bridge expose every SwitchBot feature?+
No. What comes through depends on the hub firmware and how it implements Matter.
