How Aqara can work with Home Assistant.
The right option depends on the exact model and the features you want. Most homes will use just one of these approaches.
Direct Zigbee
Zigbee is the low-power wireless network many sensors and switches use. Compatible devices pair straight to Home Assistant through ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT, so you may not need the Aqara hub. Features and firmware vary, so we check each model.
Aqara hub as a Matter bridge
Matter is the shared standard that lets different brands work together. An Aqara hub can pass supported devices into Home Assistant this way. You keep the Aqara app for setup and Aqara-only features, and Home Assistant gets the controls the hub shares.
Matter device
Certified Matter products can join Home Assistant directly. Thread models (Thread is a low-power mesh network) also need a working Thread border router in the home.
There’s more than one good way to connect Aqara
Aqara products don’t all connect the same way. The range now spans Zigbee, Matter over Wi-Fi, Matter over Thread and devices shared through an Aqara hub, and a feature you see in the Aqara app won’t always show up in Home Assistant.
So we confirm the model, region and connection before you buy. That way you won’t find out after installation that a button press, sensor reading or lock function you wanted isn’t there.
You can keep the Aqara app and Apple Home
Adding Home Assistant doesn’t mean giving up the apps your family already knows. An Aqara hub can keep handling setup and Aqara-only features, Home Assistant runs the automations across brands, and Apple Home stays right where everyone expects it.
In other homes, pairing devices directly over Zigbee is simpler. We choose based on the features you need, how easy it is to recover and who’ll look after it. Hubs aren’t always good or always bad.
- Keep a physical switch for essential lighting
- Test no-neutral switches with your actual light fittings
- Add powered Zigbee repeaters where needed, rather than assuming switches will do the job
- Note the region, firmware and pairing method for each device

Do all Aqara devices work with Home Assistant?+
Not all of them. Many work very well, but it depends on the exact model, region and firmware, and whether it connects over Zigbee, Matter or an Aqara hub. We check that before recommending anything.
Should I remove my Aqara hub?+
Not necessarily. Keeping the hub can make setup and recovery easier, especially when it shares the devices you need locally through Matter. Going direct over Zigbee makes sense when it gives you the features and control you want.
Can we keep using the Aqara app or Apple Home every day?+
Yes. Home Assistant can run the deeper automations in the background while your family keeps using the Aqara app or Apple Home day to day.
