Aqara and Home Assistant, set up the right way for each device.

We know Aqara hardware inside out. Depending on the model, we may connect it directly over Zigbee, use Matter or keep an Aqara hub in the system.

Our view

Aqara is one of the most useful smart-home ranges for Singapore homes. The important part is choosing the right model and the right way to connect it before anything is ordered.

Where Aqara fits

Aqara works best when there is a clear reason to use it.

We choose the device for the room and the job—not simply to keep every logo in the home the same.

Ways to connect

How Aqara can work with Home Assistant.

The options below are alternatives. We use the one supported by the product and best suited to the home; there is no reason to install all of them.

01Local · model-specific

Direct Zigbee

Compatible Zigbee devices join a Home Assistant coordinator through ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT. This can remove the vendor hub, but device features and firmware behaviour must be validated model by model.

02Local · through an Aqara hub

Aqara hub as a Matter bridge

Supported child devices can be shared from an Aqara hub into Home Assistant through Matter. The Aqara app remains useful for initial setup and Aqara-only features, while Home Assistant receives the features exposed by the bridge.

03Local · Wi-Fi or Thread

Matter device

Certified Matter products can join Home Assistant directly when the required controller and, for Matter-over-Thread, a working Thread border-router path are present.

01

There is more than one good way to connect Aqara

Not every Aqara product behaves in the same way. The range now includes Zigbee, Matter over Wi-Fi, Matter over Thread and products shared through an Aqara hub. A feature available in the Aqara app may not always appear through every Home Assistant connection.

We confirm the model, region and proposed connection before supply. This avoids discovering after installation that a button press, sensor reading or lock function you expected is not available through the chosen setup.

02

You can keep the Aqara app and Apple Home

Adding Home Assistant does not mean giving up the Aqara app or Apple Home. An Aqara hub can continue to handle setup and Aqara-specific features, while Home Assistant coordinates automations across brands and Apple Home remains familiar to the family.

In other homes, connecting supported devices directly over Zigbee is simpler. We choose between those approaches by looking at the features you need, how the system will be recovered and who will look after it—not by insisting that hubs are always good or always bad.

  • Keep physical control for essential lighting
  • Test no-neutral loads with the actual fittings
  • Plan powered Zigbee routers instead of assuming switches will route
  • Document region, firmware and pairing method at handover
Before you buy

What we confirm before specifying Aqara.

These are the details that can change what works, what features you receive and how straightforward the system will be to maintain.

  • !A Matter bridge may expose fewer features than the native Aqara app.
  • !Direct Zigbee support varies by model and coordinator software.
  • !No-neutral devices do not necessarily strengthen the Zigbee mesh.
  • !Locks and access devices need a separate safety and recovery review.

Questions

Common questions about Aqara and Home Assistant.

01Do all Aqara devices work with Home Assistant?

No. Many work very well, but support depends on the exact model, region, firmware and whether it is connected by direct Zigbee, Matter or an Aqara hub. Smarter checks the intended route before recommending a device.

02Should I remove my Aqara hub?

Not automatically. Keeping the hub may make setup and recovery easier, especially when it shares the devices you need locally through Matter. Direct Zigbee is useful when it provides the right features and gives the owner the level of control they want.

03Can Aqara and Apple Home remain my everyday interface?

Yes. Home Assistant can coordinate the deeper automations while Aqara or Apple Home remains the interface used by the household.
