Architectural and decorative lighting

Yeelight works well with Home Assistant—when you choose the right light.

We choose Yeelight products around the room, the wall controls and the features supported by that exact model, then connect suitable lights to Home Assistant.

Some Yeelight products work locally over LAN or Matter; others still need the cloud, so the model matters.
Our view

Yeelight is a strong choice for tunable and decorative lighting, especially on models with local LAN control. The range uses several different connection methods, so the model number matters.

Where Yeelight fits

Yeelight works best when there is a clear reason to use it.

We choose the device for the room and the job—not simply to keep every logo in the home the same.

Ways to connect

How Yeelight can work with Home Assistant.

The options below are alternatives. We use the one supported by the product and best suited to the home; there is no reason to install all of them.

01Local · supported models

Yeelight LAN control

Home Assistant communicates directly with supported lights after initial setup and after LAN Control has been enabled in the Yeelight app. Reliable Wi-Fi and predictable network addresses then become part of the installation.

02Model-dependent

Matter or ecosystem bridge

Newer products may use Matter or another connection instead of the classic Yeelight LAN protocol. We check the controls, transitions and recovery behaviour provided by the exact model.

03Useful for setup

Native app alongside Home Assistant

The Yeelight app may still be needed for initial setup, firmware updates or model-specific effects even when everyday control and automations run through Home Assistant.

01

Smart lighting still needs sensible wall control

A connected fitting becomes frustrating when somebody cuts power at the wall and every automation loses the light. We decide whether a circuit needs a smart wall switch, a scene controller, a relay or a permanently powered smart fitting before selecting the lamp.

The objective is predictable lighting for the whole household. Voice, dashboards and automations are additional controls rather than the only way to illuminate a room.

02

A light has to look good as well as connect

A product can connect perfectly and still be the wrong light for the room. Colour temperature, low-level dimming, driver noise, transitions and what happens after a power cut all affect the experience.

We test the chosen model with the controls it will actually use and set the desired power-recovery behaviour before repeating it throughout the home.

  • Confirm LAN Control or Matter capability on the exact model
  • Reserve stable network addressing where the integration needs it
  • Test fades, low-level dimming and recovery after power loss
  • Keep essential lighting understandable without the app
Before you buy

What we confirm before specifying Yeelight.

These are the details that can change what works, what features you receive and how straightforward the system will be to maintain.

  • !LAN Control is not available on every Yeelight model or firmware combination.
  • !The Yeelight app may be required for initial setup and firmware updates.
  • !A smart bulb should not be placed behind an unmanaged switch that routinely removes power.
  • !High-frequency effects and music mode have different connection behaviour from normal control.

Questions

Common questions about Yeelight and Home Assistant.

01Can Yeelight work locally with Home Assistant?

Supported Yeelight models can use the local LAN integration after initial setup and enabling LAN Control. Other models may use Matter or another route, so the model number must be checked before purchase.

02Does Yeelight need the cloud after installation?

Classic supported LAN-control models can receive normal Home Assistant commands locally, although the app or internet may still be needed for setup, firmware and selected vendor features.

03Should I use smart bulbs or smart wall switches?

It depends on the room and desired lighting. Whole-room essential lighting usually benefits from reliable physical control, while smart fittings are useful where tunable white, colour or individual control earns its place.
