Start with the model number and how it connects
Home Assistant’s classic Yeelight integration supports a listed set of Wi-Fi bulbs, strips, lamps and ceiling lights using LAN Control, Yeelight’s way of taking commands directly over your home network. You set the light up in the Yeelight app first, and LAN Control must be available and switched on.
Newer Yeelight products may connect through Matter (the cross-brand smart-home standard) or another route. Note the model number and the features you want before assuming instructions for an older bulb apply to a new light.
Make sure the wall switch doesn’t cut power to the smart light
A smart light needs power to hear commands. If people flick off an ordinary wall switch out of habit, Home Assistant can’t reach the light. The room may need a compatible scene switch, a smart switch mode, a relay, or simply a conventional light instead.
Everyday room lighting should just make sense. Guests and family shouldn’t need an app to get the lights back after a glitch.
Check how the light looks, not just whether it connects
‘Compatible’ tells you nothing about how the light looks. Check the warm-to-cool white range, colour accuracy, how low it dims, how smoothly it fades, any buzzing from the driver and what it does when the power comes back.
Use tunable white and colour where they genuinely improve the room. Where smart features add nothing, a reliable standard light is the better choice.
Plan Wi-Fi lights into your network like any other connected device
Supported LAN Control lights talk directly over your home network. Give them fixed addresses where it helps, make sure discovery and control still work if your network is split into zones, and avoid lots of individual Wi-Fi lamps where wired or mesh lighting would be easier to live with.

Can Yeelight work locally with Home Assistant?+

What happens when someone turns off the light switch?+
The smart light loses power and Home Assistant can’t reach it. Plan your wall switches around this, or use conventional lighting where that would be a problem.
Can I keep using the Yeelight app?+
Yes. You may still need it for setup, firmware updates and some Yeelight features, even when everyday control runs locally through Home Assistant.
