Start with the model number and how it connects
The classic Home Assistant Yeelight integration supports a documented set of Wi-Fi bulbs, strips, lamps and ceiling lights through the local LAN protocol. Initial setup uses the Yeelight app, and LAN Control must be available and enabled on the supported device.
Newer Yeelight products may follow a different Matter or ecosystem path. Record the model number and required features before assuming that instructions for an older bulb apply to a new fitting.
Make sure the wall switch does not cut power to the smart light
A smart fitting needs power to receive commands. If people habitually turn off an ordinary wall switch, the light becomes unavailable to Home Assistant. The room may need a compatible scene control, smart switch mode, relay strategy or a conventional fitting instead.
Essential room lighting should remain intuitive. Guests and family members should not need an app to recover from an automation or connectivity fault.
Check how the light looks—not only whether it connects
Compatibility does not describe the visible result. Confirm colour-temperature range, colour rendering, dimming floor, transition behaviour, driver noise and the state after power restoration for the chosen fitting.
Use tunable white and colour where they improve the room. A dependable fixed-colour circuit remains the better choice when smart features add no meaningful outcome.
Give Wi-Fi lights the same network planning as any other connected device
Supported LAN-control models communicate directly on the local network. Reserve predictable addresses where appropriate, keep discovery and control paths available across any segmentation, and do not overload the design with many individual Wi-Fi lamps when a wired or mesh approach would be easier to operate.
Document which functions are local and which still require the app or internet for setup, firmware or effects.
