Aqara products can connect to Home Assistant in several ways

Aqara products use Zigbee and Thread (both low-power wireless networks), Matter (a cross-platform standard), Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. How each one connects depends on the exact device and hub. A sensor that pairs straight to a Zigbee hub is a very different case from a lock that’s fully managed in the Aqara app.

Start with the model numbers and what you need each device to do. A good connection gives you the right controls, the right information and a way to recover if something goes wrong, not just an icon on a dashboard.

Keep the Aqara hub if it gives you features you still need

A supported Aqara hub keeps the usual setup process, firmware updates and Aqara-only features. Some hubs can share supported devices with Home Assistant through Matter, giving you local control over whatever the bridge supports.

A bridge won’t necessarily pass through every device or advanced feature. Test the actual models and features before buying for the whole home on that assumption.

Direct Zigbee lets Home Assistant manage the Aqara devices

Compatible Aqara Zigbee devices can pair with ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT (Home Assistant’s two main Zigbee options) through a suitable coordinator, the adapter that runs the Zigbee network. That can remove the separate Aqara hub and keep device information local, but Home Assistant then has to handle setup, coverage, firmware and troubleshooting.

Where the coordinator sits matters in Singapore homes with concrete walls and metal cabinets. No-neutral switches may not relay Zigbee signals, so counting products doesn’t tell you coverage is good.

  • Check the exact model against your chosen integration’s compatibility list
  • Plan powered repeaters and where the coordinator will sit
  • Write down how to reset and re-pair each device before the job is finished
  • Test the button presses, readings and settings your routines rely on

Test the exact functions you need on each device

Locks, cameras, presence sensors and switches have different safety, privacy and backup needs. A device can work brilliantly in its own app yet offer too few controls through a bridge for the routine you want. Another may work better directly over Zigbee but lose some manufacturer features.

A good design can mix connection methods. Your records should show which hub runs each device, where firmware updates happen and what still works if Home Assistant or the internet is down.
