Choose a good lock first, then add Home Assistant
Get the basics right first: the lock must fit and suit your door, meet fire and exit requirements, be supported by its maker and have reachable batteries and a physical override. Home Assistant should add visibility and a few carefully chosen actions, never become the only way in or out.
Pick a model designed for your actual door, and bring in the right door or lock specialist for installation.
Check the exact lock model and what it supports
Matter and native integrations can show lock state and battery level and let you lock or unlock, but brand-specific features such as fingerprint management may stay in the manufacturer’s app. The Works with Home Assistant directory lists certified models and their known limits.
Confirm the regional version, cylinder or mortise fit, any bridge or Thread border router it needs (Thread is the low-power wireless network many Matter devices use), and which logins stay with you.
Use notifications freely; be far more careful with automatic unlocking
Handy automations include a reminder that the door’s still unlocked, switching on the entrance lights after a verified unlock, or pausing a routine while the door is open. Automatic unlocking needs a much higher level of confidence.
Avoid rules that unlock just because you’re nearby. They can fire when you’re simply walking past. Keep sensitive actions behind proper verification, and test what happens when something fails.
Keep admin access and entry records in the homeowner’s hands
You should hold the admin access, recovery methods and the list of everyone who’s been given access. Any installer access should be clear, limited and easy to remove. Note the battery type, low-battery alerts and how to get in during an emergency.
Home Assistant’s history is handy for convenience and troubleshooting, but it isn’t automatically a certified access-control record or an alarm system.
