Decide who will look after the server before comparing processors
For most dedicated setups, Home Assistant recommends Home Assistant Operating System. It runs like an appliance and supports the apps used for services such as Matter and Thread. Home Assistant Container (the Docker route) suits owners who deliberately run the underlying computer themselves and look after it separately.
A professional install should make clear who updates the system, who keeps an eye on storage and what hardware could take a restored backup if the original fails.
Home Assistant Green is a sensible starting point for many homes
Green arrives with Home Assistant installed, connects by wired Gigabit Ethernet and has built-in eMMC storage, so it doesn’t rely on a removable microSD card day to day. It’s a good fit if you want official, supported hardware without looking after a general-purpose computer.
Heavier jobs such as recording, image recognition or local language processing may belong on separate hardware. Don’t buy an oversized server just to pile unrelated services onto one box, because one hardware failure would then take everything down.
Choose Zigbee and Thread radios separately from the server
Green has no Zigbee or Thread radio built in. Both are low-power wireless networks for sensors, switches and similar devices. The current Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 can run either Zigbee or Thread, but only one at a time. An existing brand hub can also stay on as a bridge if it offers the right features and a way to recover.
Keep radio adapters away from interference and metal cabinets. Where the server sits isn’t automatically the best spot for its radio, especially in landed homes.
Choose hardware that’s easy to restore or replace
What matters most is dependable storage, wired networking, supported updates, replacements you can actually buy and a restore process you’ve tested. Keep the backup emergency kit and at least one recent backup somewhere other than the server.
Note which USB radios you use and which network each one runs. Restoring Home Assistant’s data doesn’t make a different Zigbee coordinator (the radio that runs your Zigbee network) identical unless you follow the proper migration steps.
