Decide who will maintain the server before comparing processors
For most dedicated installations, Home Assistant recommends Home Assistant Operating System. It provides the appliance-like management path and supports the apps used for services such as Matter and Thread. Home Assistant Container is appropriate when the owner intentionally operates the host platform and accepts separate lifecycle responsibility.
A professional installation should identify who updates the host, who monitors storage and what hardware can accept a restored backup if the original fails.
Home Assistant Green is the default starting point
Green arrives with Home Assistant installed, uses wired Gigabit Ethernet and includes eMMC storage rather than depending on a removable microSD card for normal operation. It is suitable when the project wants supported official hardware without maintaining a general-purpose computer.
More complex recording, computer-vision or local-language workloads may belong on separate hardware. Do not buy an oversized automation server simply to run unrelated services on the same box; one hardware failure would then take everything down.
Choose Zigbee and Thread radios separately from the server
Green does not include Zigbee or Thread radio hardware. A current Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 can run either Zigbee or Thread, but it is dedicated to one of those roles at a time. Existing vendor hubs may also remain as bridges where they provide the right features and recovery path.
Place radio adapters away from interference and metal enclosures. The location of the host is not automatically the best radio location, particularly in landed homes.
Choose hardware that is easy to restore or replace
The most useful hardware features are dependable storage, wired networking, supported updates, available replacement stock and a tested restore route. Keep the backup emergency kit and at least one recent backup away from the host.
Record USB radios and their network ownership. Restoring the application database does not make a different Zigbee coordinator identical without the relevant migration procedure.

Quick answers to common questions.
01Is Home Assistant Green powerful enough for a whole home?+
It is the recommended official starting point for most homes. Heavy video, AI or unrelated server workloads should be assessed separately rather than assumed to belong on the automation host.
02Does Green include Zigbee or Thread?+
No radio is built in. Add a suitable adapter such as Connect ZBT-2 or retain an appropriate vendor bridge.
03Should I install Home Assistant in Docker?+
Container installation is valid for owners who deliberately manage the host and related services. Home Assistant OS is the recommended installation type for most users.
04Can one ZBT-2 run Zigbee and Thread at the same time?+
Home Assistant’s current product guidance says the ZBT-2 is dedicated to either Zigbee or Thread. Use separate planned paths when both are needed.
