The valuable decisions happen before the product order

BTO owners are often asked to select switches and devices while the electrical plan is already moving. The smarter sequence is to decide which functions need automation, which controls must remain conventional, and what infrastructure those choices require.

Neutral conductors, deeper boxes, curtain power and data points are inexpensive to coordinate on paper and disruptive to add after paint and carpentry are complete. The design should give the electrician and ID usable notes, not only an app screenshot.

Start small without designing a dead end

A first phase might cover living-room lighting, curtains, comfort and entry sensing. That can be enough. The important part is reserving the host, network and naming choices that let later rooms join cleanly.

Home Assistant earns a place when cross-brand integration, local logic or future expansion matters. A reliable Aqara, Apple Home or Google Home setup may be the better first answer when the household needs fewer moving parts.

Handover the home, not just the apps

Primary accounts should belong to the homeowner. Device names should match rooms and drawings. The handover should show where hubs and power supplies are, what still works if a controller is down, and how a future technician gains authorized access.
