Matter is not a replacement radio for Zigbee and Wi-Fi
Matter is an application-layer standard for controlling compatible devices over IP. A Matter device may communicate over Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread. Thread is a low-power IP mesh and needs a border router; Wi-Fi and Ethernet use the normal local network.
That is different from Zigbee, which creates its own low-power mesh around a coordinator or hub. The logos describe different layers, so a useful comparison begins with device type, power source, controller and network path.
Use Zigbee for many low-power sensors and controls
Zigbee is mature, widely available and efficient for battery sensors, buttons, switches and other low-data devices. Powered routing devices can extend the mesh, but walls, metal enclosures and poor coordinator placement still matter.
Compatibility is not universal simply because two products use Zigbee. A native hub or open coordinator must understand the device features, and direct pairing changes who provides firmware and support.
Use Wi-Fi deliberately for devices that need its capacity or simplicity
Wi-Fi is appropriate for cameras, media, appliances and devices with local APIs where the home network is designed for the load. It avoids a separate radio coordinator but puts every device on the IP network and may introduce vendor-cloud dependence.
Do not judge capacity by the router's marketing device count. Coverage, airtime, multicast behaviour, addressing and support ownership determine whether a large IoT deployment remains stable.
Use Matter where the actual device experience is proven
Matter can allow compatible devices to join more than one controller and operate locally, reducing some ecosystem barriers. It does not guarantee that every manufacturer-specific feature is exposed. A native integration may still be richer for an established product family.
For Matter over Thread, plan border-router placement and network credentials as part of the system. Check both the Matter logo and the transport used by the device; a Thread logo alone does not guarantee Matter support.
- Select the device on features, fallback and support first
- Confirm the controller and network owner for each protocol
- Place coordinators, access points and border routers for the actual property
- Document which functions remain local and which still need a cloud
