Let Reolink handle the recording and Home Assistant handle the extras
A Reolink camera system can record to a compatible SD card, NVR or Home Hub while Home Assistant receives supported streams, detection events and controls. That separation is useful: footage should continue to be captured while Home Assistant is restarting, being updated or unavailable.
Design the recording layer first—camera coverage, power, storage, retention and owner access—then decide which events belong in automations or dashboards.
Check the exact camera model before you buy
The official Reolink integration covers many directly connected cameras, doorbells, NVRs and Home Hubs, but the available features vary. Powered and battery devices do not behave alike, and some battery cameras work only through a compatible recorder or hub.
Check the current tested-model list before purchase. Record whether the project needs a live stream, person or vehicle event, doorbell press, two-way audio, playback, PTZ or another specific function rather than relying on the word ‘compatible.’

PoE is usually the cleanest foundation for fixed cameras
A fixed camera needs both reliable data and reliable power. During renovation, PoE cabling normally gives a predictable connection, central power management and a cleaner recorder topology. Wi-Fi remains useful where a cable is impractical; battery models trade installation ease for sleep, charging and event limitations.
Camera traffic, recorder capacity and remote viewing should be considered in the network design. A strong phone signal in the room does not prove the camera location has a stable link.
Use events carefully and keep privacy visible
Home Assistant can turn on an approach light, announce a doorbell, capture a notification image or show a relevant camera view after a supported event. Add cooldowns and clear conditions so routine movement does not become an alert storm.
Document who can view cameras, where recordings are stored and how long they remain. Avoid cameras in private interior spaces unless there is a specific, understood requirement. Home automation convenience does not remove the need for appropriate security and privacy decisions.
