Don’t keep your only backup on the server that might fail
Home Assistant can make encrypted backups automatically, but a copy kept only on the same device is hard to reach if its storage or hardware fails. Keep a recent backup on another system, ideally in another place.
You need the encryption emergency kit to restore an encrypted backup. Store it away from the server and make sure you, not just your installer, can find it.
Decide how often to back up, what to keep and where to store it
Home Assistant’s backup settings let you schedule backups, choose how many to keep and pick where they go. Large media files or databases slow down backups and restores, so include what your home needs rather than letting unrelated files pile up.
Keep an eye on failures. A scheduled backup that has quietly failed for months is no help, however reassuring the green tick looked on day one.
Remember what a Home Assistant backup can’t replace
A backup holds your settings and Home Assistant data, but getting back up and running also depends on radios, network addresses, external databases, certificates, brand accounts and passwords. Keep a simple note of how the system fits together, plus a list of your devices, alongside your backup plan.
When moving to a new Zigbee radio or server, follow the proper migration process. Restoring a file on its own won’t rebuild your radio network.
Practise restoring the system before you need to
A safe test might use spare hardware, a quiet time slot and a clear way back if something goes wrong. Check that you can find the backup file and emergency key, reach the restored system and spot any integrations that need extra attention.
After major updates or changes to your setup, make a fresh backup you know is good and update your notes.
